Annual flower displays return
For the third year running, Watford Business Improvement District (BID) businesses have funded colourful floral displays in the town centre.
Made up of a beautiful array of blue, white and red shades of flowers, the displays will be in place until October. This year, the BID has increased the number of installations which include 60 floral cubes and 18 three-tier planters across the length of the High Street, 12 pole baskets on lampposts at the Queens Road underside outside intu Watford plus 27 baskets along the bridge over the pond and the underpass at The Parade.
Individual businesses: Warrant Properties, The One Crown, Bottrills, Watford Leisure Centre Central, Citipark car parks, intu Watford and the Peace Hospice are further supporting the BID’s work to brighten up the town centre by purchasing a total 59 of hanging baskets from the BID to display outside their properties.
Suppliers of the flower displays - Amethyst Horticulture, have planted 250 plants in each floral cube, which are produced from cuttings sourced in the UK and Europe. The design of the planter is unique to Amethyst and is manufactured from recycled plastic.
The Watford BID flower displays complement the hanging baskets that Watford Borough Council attach to lampposts on the High Street and the floral ‘W’ in the pond through its contractor Veolia.
Kwame Tefe, chair of Watford BID, the organisation funded by town centre businesses, said: “The flower displays add colour and vibrancy to our town and provide a beautiful backdrop to the summer activities. I look forward to seeing the community and visitors enjoying the flowers as they bloom across the season.”
The project is just part of the work Watford BID is doing to enhance the look and feel of the town centre. Other projects have included the investment in festive lights for the town centre and a clean art installation on The Parade flyover, winning the Purple Flag Award for the town centre’s night time economy, the Service Excellence Awards that celebrate the businesses who put customer service first, Watford Food & Drink week as well as the extensive marketing of Watford using the ‘Watford For You’ brand.
Watford BID was set up in 2016, after businesses voted on its creation in October 2015. The BID sees a diverse range of businesses in the town centre join forces for the greater good of the town.
