Cassiobury Hub wins two accolades
Based at Watford's best loved park, Cassiobury Hub - built thanks to a major regeneration project led by Watford Borough Council - has won the Most Sustainable Construction Award and Project of the Year Award at the Hertfordshire Building Futures Awards, which celebrates schemes at the forefront of sustainable design and construction.
The project, which began in 2011, received £6.6m of funding (£5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery Fund, and £1.6m from the council) and the state-of-the-art and energy efficient Cassiobury Park Hub is now home to additional changing rooms, toilets, fully inclusive Changing Places facilities, events and education space, and the popular Daisy’s in the Park café. The paddling pools also received a £2.8m upgrade as a part of the regeneration works.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “I am delighted that this major regeneration project led by Watford Borough Council has been recognised by the Building Futures judges. Cassiobury Hub is already proving to be a very popular building. Our investment, along with funding from the Heritage Lottery and Big Lottery funding, has transformed the area into an exciting, modern water play and splash area for families to enjoy. The hub is well used by local schools and provides a meeting place for the whole community. These awards are well deserved recognition for all those who helped design and deliver these wonderful new facilities.”
The Most Sustainable Construction Award, is for developments that have made an exceptional contribution to environmental sustainability, throughout the whole life-cycle of the project, from the early planning stages, throughout construction, to the completed build and consideration of future uses. The judges said: “An outstanding example of how modern sustainable construction can be provided simply. The social sustainability aspects of The Hub are particularly noteworthy, having resulted in the sensitive regeneration of an important area of Cassiobury Park, by providing an area for healthy outdoor play and recreation for generations to come.”
The Project of the Year Award, is for schemes that have holistically embraced sustainability and are an exemplar for best practice in sustainable development. Submissions that push the boundaries and provide an insight into the future of sustainability, or provide innovative and/or bespoke solutions are welcomed in this category. The judges said: "This public building has had a significant positive impact on the Park. People love it. Good design and some clever thinking has created a park with its own distinctive character."
