Watford’s Big Screen proves a big hit

Watford’s free outdoor cinema drew to a triumphant close yesterday after four days of screening. The Big Screen, part of Watford Borough Council’s Big Events series, was brought back by popular demand for a second year running.

This time the screen was 30% bigger with improved sound, drawing almost 4,000 people over the weekend. Eight films were shown, including Dirty Dancing and The Little Mermaid.

On ‘80s Friday’, a super double-bill of The Goonies and Ghostbusters was capped off with a prize for best 80s outfit. Alan Ronald of Oakdale Road was the happy winner of a £50 intu voucher for his Ghostbusters outfit: “The Big Screen is amazing – thank you for putting it on for free, Watford is incredibly lucky. I’m already looking forward to next year!”

Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “The quality of the Big Screen was even better this year, with an impressive picture and sound. There was something for everyone and it was good to see people of all ages enjoying the films. Members of the audience on the Saturday told me that they thought the Big Screen was wonderful. It brought people together in the heart of our town and really showed what a thriving and happy place Watford is.”

Next up in the Big Events series is Big Sports Day, returning for a second year, which is taking over The Parade from 11am-5pm on Saturday 19 September. People will have the chance to get a taster of a whole host of sports, including BMX, rugby, climbing, football, golf, cricket, athletics and more.
