The Big Screen is back – have a say on what’s shown!

As part of the Big Events – a series of community events put on by Watford Borough Council – Watford’s outdoor cinema, the Big Screen, is back by popular demand.

Last year, the outdoor screen attracted hundreds to The Parade by the pond and this time it’s 30% bigger and the sound is even better. Bring a blanket and a picnic or pick up some hot dogs, ice cream and popcorn there.

From Thursday 20 August – Sunday 23 August eight films will be shown – check out the full listings at For the Saturday we’re giving you the chance to vote for which film you want to see on the Big Screen at 5.30pm. You can choose between four very different but classic films.

The People’s Choice

• Dirty Dancing (1987) (12)
Spending the summer in a holiday camp with her family, Frances "Baby" Houseman falls in love with the camp's dance instructor Johnny Castle.

• Avengers Assemble (2012) (12)
Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

• Casablanca (1942) (U)
Set in unoccupied Africa during the early days of World War II: An American expatriate meets a former lover, with unforeseen complications.

• Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1987) (PG)
Two seemingly dumb teens struggle to prepare a historical presentation with the help of a time machine.

Elected Mayor of Watford Dorothy Thornhill said: “The Big Screen was a roaring success last year and this year it’s going to be even better. The People’s Choice for the 5.30pm film on Saturday has made people really excited and the votes have been flooding in. Once again, it’s a free event, drawing lots of people to our town centre so that they can see just how great Watford is. Residents and visitors should also make the most of summer with our Big Beach, which begins on Saturday. There will be 100 tonnes of sand in the town centre, which is something you don’t see every day.”

Voting is open until 2 August and you can either vote online at now or head down to the Big Beach (The Parade by the pond, 25 July – 2 August, 9am-9pm every day) to pick up a voting slip and vote there.
